Born and raised in New York, Steven Feder began his career performing stand-up comedy while studying acting under renowned teacher Bill Esper at the prestigious William Esper Studio. As a member of The Creative Actors Repertory Theater, he performed, directed, and produced numerous stage productions, including Savage in Limbo, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, and Speed-the-Plow.
Feder transitioned from theater to film by producing and co-writing The Big Gig, which earned three International Grand Prize Awards, including the Nicholson Award and the coveted Audience Award at the Hamptons International Film Festival.
Among his notable film credits, Feder wrote, produced, and directed The Cottonwood, winner of the Dramatic Feature Jury Prize. The film starred Pruitt Taylor Vince, Gia Carides, Stacy Edwards, Cynthia Nixon, Michael Wright, Tony Sirico, and Missi Pyle, and was featured on Showtime’s Best of Independent Film Directors’ Cut Series.
He also wrote, directed, and produced the romantic comedy It Had to Be You, starring Natasha Henstridge, Michael Vartan, Michael Rispoli, and Olivia d’Abo, with music by Academy Award-winning composer Luis Bacalov and Orchestra di Roma.
Most recently, Feder wrote and directed A Brooklyn Love Story, starring Michael Rispoli, Dan Grimaldi, Vincent Pastore, Joseph D’Onofrio, Katie McCarty, Michael Morano, and Christopher Ryan. The film received a nomination for Film Threat’s Best Indie Romance.
Feder recently adapted Jack London’s The Game and A Piece of Steak into a feature screenplay for producer Gunther Fishgold. His thriller pilot TRUST is currently in active development, while The Ropes, a scripted series based on his experiences in the world of professional boxing, is being developed with producer Brendan Bragg of Haven Entertainment.
His recent producing credits include Sisterhood, Inc. for Fox/Hallmark, starring Rachael Leigh Cook, Daniella Monet, and Steve Schirripa.
Feder also recently wrote the music-filled romantic comedy Sing to Me, starring The Voice winner and American Idol runner-up Alessandra Guercio, which is currently being packaged. In television, he is developing Bird in Flight, a Catch Me If You Can-style mob adventure series based on the true story of Johnny “Bird” Coiro Jr., a second-generation member of the Colombo crime family whose life of crime took him around the world.
Currently, Feder is directing the documentary The Wonder of It All, filming in Providence, Rhode Island. The project explores the life of legendary boxing promoter Jimmy Burchfield and the history of organized crime on Federal Hill.
Casting has begun for the crime thriller Under the Influence, which Feder wrote and will direct. He is also attached to direct The Prince of East Harlem, a mafia thriller adapted from Nick Rondi’s novel The Nappers for producers Kevin Matusow, Cary Alex, and The Traveling Picture Show Company.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Feder has worked as a director, screenwriter, script doctor, ghostwriter, and author. He has written dozens of screenplays and directed feature films, music videos, commercials, and documentaries, including The Promoter, produced with Peter Berg for HBO, chronicling the life of legendary boxing promoter Bob Arum.
Outside filmmaking, Feder has maintained a nineteen-year association with professional boxing. He has managed three world champions and traveled extensively alongside his close friend Freddie Roach, the Hall of Fame trainer and seven-time Trainer of the Year at Wild Card Boxing. Feder appears as himself in Peter Berg’s Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary series On Freddie Roach and the State of Play episode “A Fighting Chance.”
A lifelong New Yorker at heart, Feder remains a devoted fan of the New York Knicks and New York Yankees. He resides in Los Angeles while continuing to work on both coasts and throughout the world.
